Biography
Mubarak Shah is the 166su Trustee Chair Professor of Computer Science and the founding director of both the Center for Research in Computer Vision (CRCV) and the Institute of Artificial Intelligence (IAI) at the 166su.
Dr. Shah is internationally recognized for his contributions to computer vision, video surveillance, visual tracking, human activity recognition, and UAV video analysis. With an h-index of 150 and more than 118,000 citations, he is the most cited researcher at 166su and among the most highly cited scholars worldwide in computer vision. He has authored several books, published extensively in leading journals and conferences, and served in editorial leadership roles for major computer vision publications.
Dr. Shah is a Fellow of the ACM, IEEE, AAAS, SPIE, IAPR, the National Academy of Inventors (NAI), and a member of the Academy of Science, Engineering and Medicine of Florida (ASEMFL). His honors include the ACM SIGMM Award for Outstanding Technical Contributions to Multimedia Computing, UCF’s Pegasus Professor Award, NSF recognition for establishing and maintaining an exemplary REU site, and the 2024 CRA-E Undergraduate Research Faculty Mentoring Award.
Throughout his career, Dr. Shah has supervised 56 Ph.D. students, 13 M.S. theses, 11 B.S. theses, and mentored 19 postdoctoral researchers. As Principal Investigator of the National Science Foundation Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) Site in Computer Vision for nearly four decades, he has mentored hundreds of undergraduate researchers whose work has resulted in more than 80 co-authored publications. He also has mentored high school students through the Army Research Office’s High School Apprenticeship Program (HSAP) and Research and Engineering Apprenticeship Program (REAP).
